Worksafe Regulations

New WorkSafe "Prevention of Falls Regulations" will be in effect from the 31 st March 2004 . These new Regulations apply to all industries (not just the Building & Construction Industry) where employers will be required to identify and control fall hazards of more than 2 metres at their workplaces.

The Building and Construction Industry will have two supporting Codes of Practice for guidance, one for "General (Commercial) Construction" and the other being for "Housing Construction".

The Code of Practice for "General Construction" is virtually a re-write and replaces the existing Code of Practice for safe work on roofs, which Commercial builders have been working to for the past 15 years.

Domestic builders will now have the new Code of Practice for "Housing Construction" which is designed to give practical guidance to domestic builders and their trades.

The following is a brief outline of some of the changes that will effect Domestic Builders with the release of the new Housing Code of Practice:

Roofing tasks:

  • Roof guardrail or physical fall protection will be required where roof work exceeds 3 metres to the gutter line. This also applies where metal roofs or fully glazed tiles exceeds 23 degree pitch and where concrete or semi-glazed tiles exceeds 26 degree pitch.
  • When working height is under 3 metres, a 2 metre clear zone (from outer edge of gutter) MUST be maintained in order to prevent the requirement for fall protection (eg. be free from fences, survey pegs, stacked materials etc.)
